Understanding EDI X12 at the Deepest Level

Every integration we build is grounded in a thorough understanding of the ANSI X12 document structure. The envelope hierarchy works like nested containers:

ISA / IEA Envelope

The outermost "manila envelope" — spans exactly 106 characters, contains interchange control headers, sender/receiver IDs, and the element separator.

GS / GE Group

The "white envelope" nested within the ISA — contains the Functional ID Code (PO = Purchase Order, IN = Invoice), sender/receiver IDs, and version identifier (X, 004010, 005010X222).

ST / SE Transaction Set

The actual "document" — the business content itself. Each ST segment opens a transaction (850=PO, 856=ASN, 810=Invoice, 997=Acknowledgment) with its unique control number.
